Storm damage forces inmate transfer from Dixon

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (AP) -- The Illinois Department of Corrections says it transferred 78 inmates from the Dixon prison after a severe storm Friday night damaged the roofs of several housing units.

Corrections spokeswoman Stacey Solano says the inmates from Dixon were transferred to maximum-security Pontiac Correctional Center.

A storm that swept through north-central Illinois knocked out power and caused the roof damage. Solano says no one was injured. Emergency generators are providing power to the penitentiary and Solano says the prison is locked down.

Anders Lindall of the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees says Corrections told the union that the inmates transferred were from the unit that houses mentally ill inmates.

Solano says the agency is assessing the extent of the damage.
