Warm Weather Helping Insects Make Early Spring Appearance

ROCKFORD (WIFR) -- Ants, termites and bees. Three things homeowners don't want to see attacking their homes are out making their presence known earlier than usual this season.

Spring has sprung early, bringing warm temperatures to the Stateline that residents are already out enjoying. The heated forecast isn't all good news however. The unusual conditions are bringing out some unwelcome pests well ahead of schedule.

"Carpenter ants have already started to move around and there's already been reports of termite activity in homes which is about 6 to 7 weeks early. So their colonies are only going to increase”, says owner of Rock River Pest Control, Brandon Wallace.

Ants, termites and bees. Three things homeowners don't want to see attacking their homes are out making their presence known. Thanks to no heavy frosts this winter, many of those insects didn't die off. While the pests may be getting an early start, simple landscaping tips can help keep your house from becoming a bug breeding ground.

"Homeowners don't want any wood, they want all wood on their foundations to be one inch above the soil at a minimum. No branches touching the house, no shrubs, no leaf litter and mulch 15 inches away from the house”, says Wallace.

Gutter cleaning is also vital in the fight against pests. Always make sure your gutters are free of any blockages and allow your downspouts to flow three feet away from your home. By keeping the soil dry near the foundation, it decreases the chance that termites and other insects will be attracted to your home.

With temperatures in the 70s on the horizon and summer yet to come, exterminators say the insect war will only get tougher, making for what could be a very pest filled season.
