UPDATE: Illinois State Police say Saturday's accident on U.S. 20 near Rock City Road was caused by a driver who failed to stop at a stop sign. Investigators say two people are in serious condition, including a six year old who was pulled from a car.
Release from ISP:
On Saturday, December 17, 2011, at approximately 7:50 PM, Illinois State Police District 16 Troopers responded to a multi-vehicle crash at the intersection of US Route 20 and Rock City Road in Stephenson County.
The investigation found a red 2007 Chevrolet Malibu, driven by Marianne Bennett, 24, of Oak Park, Illinois was traveling north on Rock City Road and failed to stop at the stop sign at the intersection of US Route 20.
A blue 1997 Honda Civic, driven by Jennifer Johnson, 23, of Machesney Park, Illinois, traveling east on US Route 20 struck the rear driver side of the Chevrolet as it passed through the intersection. The Honda became disabled in the roadway and was then struck in its rear driver side door by a gray 2010 Volvo traveling east on US Route 20, driven by Ann Frost, 55, of Riverwoods, Illinois.
Bennett was wearing a seatbelt and was not injured. Frost and her passenger, Daniel Frost, 57, were both transported to Freeport Memorial Hospital where they were treated for non-life threatening injuries. Both were wearing seatbelts.
Johnson was wearing her seatbelt during the collision with the Chevrolet. She removed it following the collision to tend to her 6 year old passenger. When the Volvo struck her vehicle she was not restrained and was ejected from the vehicle. The 6 year old passenger was extricated from the vehicle and both Johnson and her passenger were transported to Rockford Memorial Hospital with serious injuries.
The speed limit on US Route 20 at the intersection of Rock City Road is 65 miles per hour. Alcohol was not a factor in the crash. Bennett was issued a citation for failing to yield at an intersection.
