A more than 200 year-old Freeport school could soon see some major renovations.
The one-room school house is currently on the Stephenson County Historical Society's Museum property. Hundreds of children went to elementary school in the building, which has a classroom typical of the 1920s. Many schools have students visit the schoolhouse on field trips.
The organization has a $70,000 state grant for the renovation project but still needs another $41,000 to help pay for structural changes, a new roof and a heating system.
"What we here at the museum think is important is that the community is stepping up and saying yes, we think this is important too. We need to preserve this", says Dr. Edward Finch, the museum’s Executive Director.
