Move It And Lose It

"It's a challenge both to take it off and to keep it off."

Doctor John Myers is talking about his battle with weight loss, something many of us struggle with. But Doctor Myers says just because it's a struggle, doesn't mean it can't be done.

The first thing to remember is to watch what you eat. The average person needs about 2,000 calories a day to maintain their weight. But those can add up quickly, even with what we think are healthy food choices.

"Most fruit juices are 10% juice, the rest is high fructose corn syrup. So you're actually getting a lot of calories with sugar."

And Doctor Myers says not to rely on fad diets that promise fast results.

"What you need to do is work on say a pound a week and if you have a goal of say 20 pounds, don't expect to do that in three weeks. That's not healthy for you long term. It may get you into that bikini, but it's not going to help you long term"

The second weight loss fundamental is exercise. Most experts say we need about 30 minutes of it each day. But one mistake many of us make is to spend too much time doing cardiovascular exercise, and not enough time on weight training. Something Peak Fitness Trainer Pat Wilson says is key to weight loss.

" A lot of women are concerned about bulking up and one of the things they have to understand is they just don't have the genetic material to do that. Muscle burns a lot of calories at rest, while fat does not."

But Wilson says when we are doing cardiovascular work, switch is up every now and then to burn even more calories.

"Interval Training is a nice little tactic to use and try to challenge the body in a different way."

Overall, weight loss success is difficult, but it can be done, just ask Doctor Myers.

"I've lost 50 pounds over the last year, and I'm still working to try and keep it off and to try to take off 20 more in the next year."

Doctor Myers dropped the weight by taking his own advice. Eating healthier, moving more, and most importantly, staying motivated.

"It's a lifelong commitment, you can't get frustrated, we're all human."
