It's been a turbulent month for the family of Mark Barmore, the man Rockford police shot to death inside a church daycare. Now Barmore's mother speaks out only to 23 News after experiencing what she calls a "hate crime."

"I'm saying enough is enough, I'm quiet no more," says Mary Ann Barmore.

Barmore woke up Sunday morning to find swastikas and crude language painted on her car and the rear view mirror smashed. Barmore believes the act is a hate crime, but says she does not want to believe it's tied to her son Mark Barmore's recent death.

"I don't want to believe that people can be that cruel, I don't want to believe that this world is that cruel, especially by it being 2009, come on y'all come on," says Barmore.

Barmore says her immediate family has tried to stay out of the controversy that's raged since the August 24th shooting inside the House of Grace Church Day Care.

"We're trying to keep the peace down, we're trying to not let this escalate into something violent because that's not the way."

Much of the debate centers around race: Two white officers shooting a black man. But Barmore says those arguments are not coming from her family.

"My family is not trying to turn this into something racist, because Mark was both Afro American and Caucasian. But who and what is turning it into race is other people."

That's why Barmore found the swastikas so disturbing and she says it's not the only time she's been harassed. A stranger recently called to tell the family to check the online classifieds site Craigslist. There they found a listing for Mark Anthony Barmore. It shows his criminal record and says he's one "dead thug" in hell.

"It's just not right," says Mary Ann Barmore. "You just don't be that cruel, you just don't be that cruel to people when they're grieving."

Now Barmore is praying for justice and peace. "And this is what I'm telling everybody: Take your anger and use it in positive ways."

Mary Ann Barmore also says it upsets her when people use her son's criminal record as a justification for his death. She says he wasn't perfect, but he served his time for his crimes, including battery and theft.

Barmore reported the incident to Rockford Police and they are investigating, but had no comment Sunday night.

to the barmore family this is no debate of marks past or what he did who r these people to judge him. god will judge him. and nobody is perfect and we all make mistakes its just sad mark was taken from us before making his changes and nobdy knows what was in his heart but him and god and god must of been in his heart for him to run to the house of the lord out of all places he could have ran. so to the family be strong and put it all n gods hands he will heal all ur heartach and pain and he will fixed the hearts of the wicked. he is your bridge over trouble waters. stay strong for mark and fight to the end.
