17th District Representative Makes His Way to Rockford

ROCKFORD (WIFR) -- The 17th District finds itself changing thanks to the new Illinois Congressional map; the district now represents parts of Rockford, where incumbent republican representative Bobby Schilling made his way Saturday night.

Schilling spoke at the annual Winnebago County Republicans' Lincoln Day Dinner at Cliffbreakers Saturday night. The Rock Island native is seeking re-election after taking office in 2011. Despite having to introduce himself to thousands of voters in the newly re-aligned district, Schilling says he's confident he'll be victorious come election time.

"I think the contrast is going to be very clear between whoever the opponent is. The other side wants a bigger government, more taxes and more regulations. Where we want the government to get out of our way, we want less taxes, we want to figure out how to get manufacturing back to the United States”, says Schilling.

Schilling will face the winner of next month's democratic primary between Cheri Bustos and Freeport mayor George Gaulrapp.

They have mentioned Greg Aguilar in the past even if they didnt this time. Maybe it's easier to forget him when he hasn't been here, and it's hard to tell if he's actively campaigning or not. What I really wanted to write about, however, was how Schilling's only visit was to big wigs at Cliffbreakers and not to the people he could represent. And to be fair, even Bustos has only visited a selected crowd. I don't know much about Aguilar, explained above, but I believe George Gaulrapp seems to be the only one that actually speaks to us regular folks. There have been links to the maps here before, try a search. East side is mostly 17th, don't remember where the lines quite are.

It is sad that Rockford's "#1 News Source" is apparently unaware of the complete Democratic candidate field in the 17th District congressional primary next month. In addition to Bustos and Gaulrapp a third candidate from the Quad cities, Greg Aguilar is also actively seeking the nomination. In fact only two of these Democrats apparently have agreed to participate in a candidate forum in Freeport on March 1st, Gualrapp and Aguilar. Perhaps your station will make it a point to fully inform Democrats within your viewing area of the complete range of choices in the upcoming March 20th primary.

The media needs to put a map on the website because Rockford is split right down the middle from north to south. We need to know who we should be voting for. Is the east side the 16th or 17th district? Please WIFR inform us.
