SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (AP) -- State safety experts are asking snowmobilers to be cautious when the snow starts falling in Illinois.
The Illinois Department of Natural Resources says there were 47 snowmobile accidents in the state last season and one fatality. That's down from 66 accidents and seven fatalities during the 2007-2008 season.
Experts say many accidents can be prevented if riders take proper precautions. Two new online snowmobile safety courses will be available in 2012. The department also offers traditional classroom safety courses.
Safety tips include staying alert, knowing the trail and traveling at a reasonable rate of speed. Riders and drivers also should wear proper clothing and know the weather forecast. They should also be familiar with the thickness of any ice.
