School Health Requirements

Michele Shobinger is a very busy woman. She's the school nurse at Auburn High School in Rockford. Inbetween monitoring daily meds and handling a constant flow of students, she's taking on a mountain of paperwork to keep dozens of students in school.

"We do a lot of chasing! As the school nurses, we do a lot of...that big sigh comes again!"

The state deadline for proof of health requirements, including immunizations, was October 15th. But dozens of students at every school are still in the red and cannot legally attend class. Often, the procedures have been completed but records have not been transfered correctly from previous schools.

"It is a matter of getting the files in our hot little hands," Michele says.

Parents of students with incomplete records have been receiving exclusion letters, letting them know exactly what needs to be done or what records the school needs for the student to come back to school.
Michele says the problem might be avoided if the district required proof of immunizations and physicals at registration, instead of at the state's October 15th deadline.
