It's back to the blackboard Monday for award winning harlem teacher Ruth Meissen. Meissen spent the weekend in Decatur picking up some hardware at the 33rd annual "Those Who Excel" banquet. The Harlem Middle School art teacher wins Illinois Teacher of the Year. She will now represent the Land of Lincoln at local state and national events.
"I did not go into this with any pre-conceived notion that i would win," said Meissen. "My only thought was when they announce the winner, politely clap for them, and that will be it."
Meanwhile, more honors for area teachers. Sherrily Martin from Keith School has earned the Claes Nobel Educator of Distinction. That's a national award recognizing teachers who have made a lasting difference in their classrooms by encouraging students to strive for excellence. Congratulations to both local teachers..
