Paying School Cops More

One of the things the district would like to see is a larger police presence in its high schools. Monday night the operations committee threw around the idea of making it more attractive for off duty police officers, to want to work in our schools.

District 205 Chief Operating Officer Tom Hoffman explained that off duty officers work at Rockford schools for about 23 dollars an hour. But they could be working many other places for closer to 35 or 40 dollars an hour. The difference in pay may be one of the reasons the district hasn't had as many officers as it would like. Committee members did say raising wages for local cops would be only one thing the district could consider doing to prevent future problems.

An increase to 30 dollars an hour was discussed, but the committee is going to do more research before it makes any recommendations to the full board.
