Will New Voters in Wisconsin Complete Their Ballots?

Posted: 11/03/2008 - Will new voters complete their ballots? MADISON, Wis. (AP) -- A record number of new voters are expected to cast ballots in the presidential race -- but will they bother to vote in other races down the ticket? Political strategists say the answer to that question will help decide which party wins Statehouse races around the country and in Wisconsin. Both parties are working to reduce the "voter dropoff" rate -- the number of people who cast ballots in the presidential race but leave the rest of their ballots blank. Studies show the dropoff rate can be 15 percent or higher in races such as the state Legislature. In 2004 in Wisconsin, for instance, about 415,000 voters who cast ballots in the presidential race didn't vote for a state Assembly candidate. Representative Mark Pocan of Madison is leading the Democrats' efforts to win an Assembly majority. For Pocan, reducing dropoff is a top priority. Younger voters in particular who might be unfamiliar with local politics tend to have a higher dropoff rate.
