Youth and Junior Police Academies Held in Rockford

ROCKFORD (WIFR) -- This summer local police are once again teaming up to give teens a chance to learn how to fight crime.

We stopped by the Public Safety Building on Tuesday for the Youth and Junior Police Academies.

Teenagers are learning ways to protect themselves if a gunman would open fire inside their school or even at a mall.

Sgt. Michael Spelman says through the simulation the youth cadets receives a better perspective of what it takes to be a police officer.

"We like the kids to go in there and have a little bit of training that we experience as police officers. So it's a part of the tour. We bring them down there and not only let them see how we train, but let them feel what it's like to be a police officer and train in the same situations," Spelman said.

This week the kids will learn about the dangers of driving drunk by getting behind the wheel of a golf cart while wearing beer goggles.
