World’s Largest Outdoor Synthetic Ice Skating Rink Back for Third Season

ROCKFORD (WIFR) -- Downtown Rockford’s Davis Park will once again be transformed into a winter wonderland complete with outdoor ice skating, benches, evergreen trees and thousands of twinkling lights. Winter Wonderland presented by BMO Harris Bank will mark its grand opening on Friday, November 23 at 6 p.m. Opening night will feature the new Winter Wonderland Wheel that attendees can spin to win great prizes.

For the first time, Winter Wonderland will feature FREE admission all season long. Skate rentals are $3.

The Winter Wonderland rink made its debut in 2010 with 5,000 visitors. The unique rink features 12,000-square-feet of synthetic ice, which includes an 800-foot skating trail around the park. Synthetic ice is great for beginners and children, and it can be used whether it’s 10 or 90 degrees.

The venue will again include warming tents next to the ice rink that are open to spectators. These tents can also be rented for private parties. Rockford Park District will offer concessions with items like hot chocolate, cider, coffee, soda, pretzels and hot dogs available.

“Winter Wonderland is another example of the great results that can be achieved through collaboration and partnerships. RAVE is proud once again to partner with the Rockford Park District to provide affordable, family-friendly entertainment options for the residents of our region.” said RAVE board chairman Mike Dunn.

Winter Wonderland will be open from November 23 to January 13, 2013. Regular hours are Fridays and Saturdays from 6 to 8 p.m. and Sundays from 3 to 5 p.m. There will be special holiday break hours from December 26 to January 4. Holiday break hours will be Monday through Friday from 4 to 8 p.m. The rink will be closed on Christmas Eve, Christmas Day and New Year’s Day.
