UPDATE: Man Sentenced for Reckless Homicide in 2013 Accident

UPDATE: A Rockford man pleaded guilty to reckless homicide and other charges in a December 2013 accident that killed his passenger.

25-year-old Dawon Keenan has been sentenced to eight years and three months in prison.

Keenan admitted to driving drunk when he lost control of his car on Ridge Avenue and hit a tree. His 30-year-old passenger, Ashley Charles was killed in the crash.


UPDATE: The coroner's office says 30-year-old Ashley Charles died of multiple blunt traumas she sustained in the accident.

The crash happened around 4:00 on Sunday morning in the 2600 block of Ridge Avenue. Police say the driver, 24-year-old Dawon Keenan was drunk and speeding when he crashed his car into a tree. According to the Department of Corrections , Keenan hasn't even been out of prison a year.

In 2009, he was sentenced to 8 years behind bars for an armed robbery. He now faces murder charges.


ROCKFORD (WIFR) -- A car crash early Sunday morning leaves a passenger dead and the driver behind bars.

Police say Dawon Keenan, 24, was drunk and speeding when he ran his car into a tree in the 2600 block of Ridge Avenue in Rockford, just a few blocks from Rockford Memorial Hospital. The crash happened around 4am Sunday. The passenger in the car, Ashley Charles, 30, was killed in the crash. Keenan is now charged with reckless homicide and aggravated DUI involving death among other charges. Police say he was driving on a suspended license; he was out on bond for a DUI arrest in august where he hit a Rockford police car. He’s also currently on parole after serving time for an armed robbery.
