Winnebago Teacher Biking Hundreds of Miles to Help Sick Kids

WINNEBAGO (WIFR) -- A Winnebago elementary school teacher is putting in hundreds of miles on a bike this month all to help sick kids.

What started out as just wanting to help a good cause turned into something much more personal after a devastating diagnosis just a few days ago.

"Just recently my cousin’s daughter was diagnosed with a brain tumor, and she's two and a half years old," Mike Belden, a fifth grade teacher at Jean McNair Elementary School, said.

Belden is riding his bike to work, 45 miles round trip, to raise money for St. Jude Research Children's Hospital. He's riding all month taking pledges and donations hoping to raise $3,000. He's already about a third of the way there. Belden says as a teacher it breaks his heart to see sick kids.

"We work with kids every day and it’s very sad when you see a child that’s sick that never really gets to achieve their goals in life and we just want to help the kids get there," he said.

By the end of the month Belden will have put 900 miles on his bike.
