Winnebago Students Learn About Vietnam Wall

WINNEBAGO (WIFR) -- Many veterans may have to travel all the way to Washington, D.C. to visit the Vietnam Wall, however this fall a replica of the wall is coming right here to the Stateline.

The replica is a mobile version of the tribute to thousands of Vietnam War vets. We'll get a chance to see it starting September 11th on the east side of Loves Park City Hall. That's where the Young at Heart Festival usually is.

Many teachers say it's a chance for them to give their students a history lesson outside of the classroom.

"It's the greatest and unfortunately again it's just so tough to get out of that classroom, there are virtual field trips and things you can do, but there's like going out there and kicking the tire so to speak, and hands on," Steven Hall, a teacher at Winnebago Middle School, said.

It costs more than $5,000 to bring the replica here. It's paid for through private donations and the Rockford branch of VietNow. The wall will be on display for a week starting on 9-11.
