Winnebago County to Hold Informational Meeting Regarding Grant Funds for Flood-Prone Areas

ROCKFORD (WIFR) -- Long-awaited relief is on the way for residents in two flood-prone areas of Winnebago County, according to Jim Hughes, the County’s Director of Development Services.

Winnebago County will be holding an informational meeting Friday April 12, 2013, 5:00 PM at Veterans Memorial Hall, 211 North Main Street, Rockford, IL 61101 to further advance the processing of $3,668,955 in grant funds from Illinois Emergency Management Agency (IEMA) for a voluntary property buyout program for property owners in designated floodways.

These grant monies will be provided for two project areas. The first project area is Blackhawk Island, located near the Chicago-Rockford International Airport. The Blackhawk Island Project Area will receive $1,446,034 in grant money. The second project area is Edgemere Terrace, located near the Village of Roscoe. Edgemere Terrace will receive $2,222,921.

“Winnebago County has been pursuing this project for four years with delays and temporary setbacks, but our staff is extremely perseverant and we have not given up. At last, we have the successful completion of this project in sight,” said Hughes.

Jack Petersen, a consultant that specializes in “Community Land Acquisition Services” will be working with Hughes and also the County’s Cartographic Specialist Chris Dornbush on these projects. Property owners will be contacted by Jack Petersen.
