UPDATE: A Rockford woman has pleaded guilty to stealing a squad car.

43-year-old Kristina McNutt has pleaded guilty to stealing a Winnebago County squad car and will spend the next 4 and a half years in prison.

Back on January 16, McNutt was being transferred from the Cook County jail when she slipped out of handcuffs, crawled out the back window of a Winnebago County Sheriff squad car when it was filling up at the Mobil gas station off of South Main Street. She was arrested hours after escaping.

ROCKFORD (WIFR) – The woman who allegedly stole a squad car by getting out of her handcuffs and climbing through the back window is now in custody. This comes just a little over a week after an ambulance was stolen from a Rockford hospital.

Winnebago County Sheriff Dick Meyers says 43-year-old Kristina McNutt was originally taken into custody on a drug warrant. Meyers says she was handcuffed and “belly chained” in the back seat of a squad car that was fueling up at a gas station on South Main Street around 1:00 this afternoon. The deputy says McNutt somehow slipped out of her handcuffs and out the back window. That’s when the officers says he started chasing her around the building and into the driver’s seat of the car where she took off.

Meyers says the car was abandoned on Fielding Road about 30 to 45 minutes later. McNutt was arrested on 7th street two hours after that. We’re told she knocked on the door of an elderly man who gave her a ride to that 7th Street location.

Meyers says the department will now review security footage from the gas station. He also says the suspect is no stranger to the Justice Center. She’s been in jail many times before on various charges.
