WINNEBAGO COUNTY (WIFR) -- Last month's flood definitely caused a lot of problems around the Stateline. And now, health officials are worried about possible contamination to well water.

That's why the Winnebago County Health Department is ready to test impacted wells for free.

Testing kits are available through the health department. They say water should only be tested once visual contaminants are gone and a disinfection process completed.

"Prior to sampling, we are asking those that have affected wells is to first let the water recede. Next, pump out your well until you don't see any visual contamination in which you can then have it chlorinated. We strongly recommend a well contractor to do that."

Now, it is very important that you take the sample and return it for sampling on the same day. Results are typically mailed back to the property owner within a few days.

The free testing kits can be picked up and dropped off from 8am to 4pm Monday through Thursday at four locations in Winnebago county:

-Machesney Park Village Hall
300 Machesney Drive
Machesney Park, IL

-Roscoe Township Office
5792 Elevator Road
Roscoe, IL

-Cherry Valley Township Office
4875 Blackhawk Road
Rockford, IL

- Winnebago County Health Department
401 Division Street
Rockford, IL

The testing will take place through May 17th.
