WINNEBAGO COUNTY (WIFR) -- The number of children in Winnebago County being abused or neglected is growing according to one group but the number of people volunteering to give those kids a voice is not.
CASAs are Court Appointed Special Advocates who serve many purposes for those kids going through the county's abuse and neglect court. The Winn. Co. CASA office says there are just under 1,500 kids in the county that are going through the court system right now but they are only able to help 315 of them because they only have 142 volunteers making the 1 1/2 to 2 year commitment to the program.
"The need is great right here in the Rockford and Winnebago County community," said CASAs Taryn Marco. "There are so many children who's voices who aren't being heard; who's voices are falling through the cracks of an over burdened social services system."
CASA says they need 700 volunteers to serve the more than 1,400 kids going through the court system, and hope to have the numbers to do so by 2020.
