Wing Ding Organizers Eye A Comeback

LOVES PARK (WIFR) -- A popular music festival could be making a comeback; the organizers behind Wing Ding just applied for a festival permit for this spring at the Rockford speedway.

The show was traditionally held near the end of May; May 25th is the date for this latest festival permit. It was approved by the Loves Park Codes and Regulations committee on Monday but the application still needs to be approved by the full council. Wing Ding was last held at the Rockford Speedway in May 2008; around 20 thousand people turned out. The concert moved to the Chicago Rockford International Airport in 2009 after the city of Loves Park refused to give organizers a permit; that was the last time the event was held. The venue often led to a lot of police overtime and injuries. Organizers have pledged to work closely with the police department to maintain order this time around. Alcohol will be served at the event in a separate walled off section of the Rockford Speedway. Smaller rock shows have been held at the venue since 2009, but none on the scale of Wing Ding.

A line up for this potential show won't be set or announced until after the festival permit is a done deal.
