UPDATE: Warming Centers Open During Overnight Hours

By  |

STATELINE (WIFR) -- Hundreds are relying on shelters and warming centers for heat and meals. Many roaming our streets without hats or gloves. The Rescue Mission is one of the few places providing warmth right now as a handful of county warming centers have closed for the day or closed hours ago. However, for the people at the Rockford Rescue Mission, there is definitely a sense of gratefulness as they are safely out of the bitter cold.

The Rescue Mission has been open all day as dozens of people have walked here from all over Rockford to come inside and be warm. There were nine warming centers open throughout the county today, but most are now closed, forcing some people to find somewhere else to go, whether that be a friend’s house, or one of the area shelters. For the folks utilizing the warming centers, even if just for a few hours, they were happy to get out of the cold.

“I think everybody’s happy to be here. Everybody spends the whole day here, they just relax, watch TV, everybody would rather be here than the cold,” said David Labak at the Rockford Rescue Center.

“I had icicles off my mustache, once I got in here, once I got in here, nice and warm…good food,” said William Champion who was at Carpenter’s Place.
Out of the nine warming centers in Winnebago County, only two will stay open the rest of the night: The Rockford Rescue Mission and the County Justice Center, with their lobby is serving as their warming center throughout the night.

The Rescue Mission says they will close for about half an hour while they serve dinner. The crisis room will then reopen and stay that way for the rest of the night. A temporary overnight warming center is also open when it's under 29 degrees at night at teh Apostolic Pentecostal Church of Rockford located at 840 Mattis Ave.
