Candidates often ask the Winnebago County Clerk for something called a "walk list," which includes all the registered voters in a certain area including their name, address, voting history, and sometimes phone number.
As the November elections draw near, candidates have been making calls and sending out mail in hopes of swaying potential voters.
"They can certainly call us and let us know, and we can take the phone number off," said Winnebago County Clerk Margie Mullins. "But that is how candidates and different committees find out who lives at that address and how they voted."
The county clerk said this information is not given out to businesses looking to sell something.
