The proposal would raise the state income tax rate to 5.25%.

ROCKFORD (WIFR) -- The Illinois house was supposed to meet and possibly vote on the tax proposal today, but the session was delayed .
Illinois is mulling a temporary 75 percent hike to help erase the state's $15 billion budget deficit. That would bump the rate from three percent to five and a quarter percent.
As a result, the average Rockfordian would pay an additional $980 in taxes next year. But many believe the hike doesn't solve a fundamental problem, the state is still spending more than it takes in.
"The worst part about it there is no spending decrease and the folks still running it today, and spent all the money are the ones who are going to raise the taxes."
