Virus Making Dogs Sick

STATELINE (WIFR) – A potentially fatal virus appears to be making dogs sick across the country.

Michale Laputa loves his dog Miley and wants to keep her part of his family for many years to come.

“I take her to the vet to get all her vaccinations and protect her from going to other public places like dog parks or areas where there’s a bunch of stray dogs.”

However, a new virus is making our four-legged friends sick.

IT’s called the Dog Circovirus and veterinarians claim that it hasn’t hit Rockford yet, but due to the contagious nature of the virus, it could.
Canine Circovirus is so new that doctors aren’t sure yet where the infection is coming from, but it’s causing vomiting, diarrhea, and a loss of appetite in our dogs and in severe cases, even death.

Veterinarian Kari Kobus says getting your dog vaccinated is the first step in protecting our furry friends.

“Keep your dog from high stress area. I f you know there’s sick dogs in the area, don’t board them. Dog parks can be easy places to transmit them back and forth.”

Kobus says there currently isn’t a vaccine, but if your dog is showing symptoms to take your best friend to the vet immediately. The sooner you treat your dog, the better the chances of survival.

Infections have been reported in California and Ohio. Vets are warning all dog owners to pay extra attention to our pets as the weather warms up, as viruses are the worst in the summer.
