BELVIDERE (WIFR) – Saturday marks the 100th Anniversary of the day Austria's Arch Duke was assassinated, sparking World War I.
As people around the world mark the anniversary, Boone County honors its local veterans.
It was appreciation day at the Boone County Historical Museum. A special exhibit called Boone County Veterans Remembered has been on display for about a month. It's filled with uniforms and memorabilia that more than 20 of our local servicemen and women brought home from their travels overseas.
Robert Lear was a pilot for the navy during World War II. He brought repair parts to tanks in North Africa, but says he came close to seeing battle.
"Waiting in San Diego to go into the Pacific, but I never got there because the war ended before I got the call. Thank the Lord!” Lear recalled.
That exhibit is open for another week. It runs through July 5.
