ROCKFORD (WIFR) -- For those like Christopher Bell, desperate for work, its far more than an early Christmas present.

" It's a job for right now, it's employment.".

Knowing he's facing some heavy competition , Bell hopes applying early will pay off.

"They told me to keep on trying eventually you'll make it, you'll get in."

Between now and the end of the year , the UPS Hub in Rockford is hiring 600 part-time driver helpers and package sorters to assist with its peak shipping period.

"As a sorting facility here at the UPS Air Hub our seasonal volume will come from all over the country so it tends to stay a bit more consistent."

"Most of the 500 seasonal employees will be loading packages like this one onto air containers which will be put on planes later that night."

" The trend we're seeing this year versus last year is many of them do have jobs but they are looking for some income to supplement their bills."

But Bell sees it as a chance to get a leg up, considering UPS tends to pick from its pool of seasonal workers for permanent jobs after the holiday season.

I don't know why everyone is upset about 8.50 an hour, there are people out there that would think that is great. some have nothing at all coming in so even a temp job with low pay is a help with some of the basics. it could mean the difference of living on the street or maybe a cheep motel. for those who need it good luck and for those who think it is not good enough for them then don't apply maybe you are not good enough for ups.

Latrice- the fact that you don't understand that if a comment does not apply to you you should not get so upset by it. If you are a working welfare recipient there is no problem at all for getting help. BUT (This is the part that may not apply to you) if all you have done your whole life is live on welfare you need to work a little. I do have a hobby. It's waiting for people like you to state the obvious and think you are telling us something new. I'm thinking you are on welfare because I don't think people on welfare are less than me. I do think you feel that way about yourself. You were the one that said we were low lifes. My opinion makes me less that you? Try again!
