ROCKFORD (WIFR) -- With just about three weeks until the municipal elections, some local candidates are getting endorsed by a major union organization.
The UAW Rockford area community action program, known as CAP has endorsed more than 30 Sttateline candidates running in the April election. They sent out this survey that ask 17 questions and the types of questions range, one asks if candidates support a person’s right to have a voice in the workplace, others ask what kind of car they drive and if they’ve ever been in a union.
Based on their answers these are some of the candidates UAW CAP is endorsing. For Rockford mayor, their pick is Jim Hughes and for Loves Park mayor, John Pruitt. So neither incumbent. Their choice for Belvidere mayor is Mark Sanderson. This is also the first time they’re endorsing school board candidates. UAW CAP reps say they believe their endorsement means a lot.
"We have a voice and not just UAW, but labor as a whole and when I say labor I mean working families in the community, not just union but working families in our community, we are the 99 percent,” said John Gedney, UAW Rockford Area CAP Chair.
UAW CAP also provides financial assistance for some campaigns, however leaders will not say how much money or to which campaigns they’ve contributed this election.
