WINNEBAGO COUNTY (WIFR) -- It's no question potholes are a huge problem in the Stateline and with all the freezing and thawing, this time of year is the worst. Now Winnebago County Sheriff's deputies are cracking down on a growing issue that may be adding to this pothole problem.

Truck driver Corey Black's morning got off to a pretty bad start.

“It was my fault that I should have been paying more attention," he admitted.

Winnebago County Sheriff's deputies pulled him over for driving a truck heavier than the road can handle. He knows some county roads have weight restrictions, but says he forgot his load was too heavy for this particular one.

"It just slipped my mind on my way back," Black explained.

This spring deputies are on the lookout for truck drivers like Black who either don't know about the weight limits or choose not to follow them. Deputy Angie Tetzlaff says it’s pretty easy picking out the heavy trucks.
"Sometimes by the tires how much pressure is being put on the tires. You can tell if a truck is full or empty," she said.
The Sheriff's Department is trying to avoid potholes. In the springtime when the roads are soft those heavy trucks come through and usually cause big ones.

"They're putting a lot of pressure on the roads and you see all the potholes and stuff like that so things like that can be caused," Tetzloff said.

But the patrols aren't just about keeping the roads clear of potholes.
"Keeping the roads maintained so people are safe," Tetzloff said.

But for truck drivers like Black, finding another route is a hassle.

"Especially out here where it's really slow I don't think I’m really too much of a hazard driving down these back country roads,” Black said.

It's just a $50 citation for trucks over the weight limit, that's unless they're heavier than the state's 80,000 pound limit. In that case, fines start at $70 and go up to $1,500.
