Trees Unharmed by Cold Weather

STATELINE (WIFR) – While the cold may be having a negative effect across the Stateline, one thing that’s remaining unharmed is the trees.

According to John Richards of Tree Care Enterprises, trees remain unharmed in the extreme temperatures. He says that for trees to become ill, there needs to be a sudden change in the weather because they would not be prepared. But since the trees are protected by the snow and cold, that means any Emerald Ash Borer insects living inside the trees are safe as well.

"They could've been killed off, but now they've progressively went into a deep sleep and their antifreeze is built up. We probably won't see a lot of kill off of the Emerald Ash Borer that's already in trees right now as we speak."

Richards says his biggest concern for the trees is the amount of salt that has been laid down on streets and sidewalks. He says it could lead to some damage in the spring.
