STATELINE (WIFR) -- Beginning next week, westbound traffic on the Jane Addams Memorial Tollway (I-90) between Irene Road near Belvidere and I-39 will be reduced to one lane until early May and an alternate route posted to offer drivers the option to travel west via U.S. Route 20 to reach I-90 and I-39. Two lanes will remain available for eastbound traffic. In addition, westbound traffic will be shifted at the Belvidere Toll Plaza.
As part of the I-90 Rebuilding and Widening Project, the western segment of the roadway between Randall Road in Elgin and I-39 near Rockford will be rebuilt and a new lane added to provide three lanes in each direction. In addition, the inside lane and shoulder in both directions will be widened to accommodate future transit opportunities.
Work on the 37-mile western segment is 50 percent complete with work on the eastbound lanes completed in 2013. The Tollway is scheduled to complete construction of the westbound lanes by the end of the year.
This construction season, two lanes of traffic in both directions between Elgin and Rockford will be maintained by shifting all traffic onto the eastbound side of the road while the westbound lanes are rebuilt and widened.
The temporary westbound lane reduction between Irene Road and I-39 is needed to provide a work zone for the removal of the Kishwaukee River Bridge and to complete median work to prepare to shift all traffic between Elgin and Rockford onto the eastbound side of the road.
