Three Rockford Public Schools Receive State Honor Roll Recognition

ROCKFORD (WIFR) -- Three Rockford Public Schools have been named to the 2012 Illinois Honor Roll by the State Board of Education.

Washington Academy earned an Academic Excellence Award, given to a school that has sustained very high academic performance over at least three years. At Washington, 100 percent of the students met or exceeded standards in both reading and math on state standardized tests. The district’s gifted elementary school has received an excellence award every year since 2005.

For the first time since 2003 – when the state started the Honor Roll – a district high school won an Academic Improvement Award. East High School was one of only 19 high schools across Illinois to earn the improvement award, which recognizes substantial gains in performance over the last several years. In just one year, East students jumped six points on the composite score for the Prairie State Achievement Examination (PSAE).

Swan Hillman Elementary School earned an Academic Improvement Award for a nearly nine-point increase on the Illinois Standards Achievement Test (ISAT) from 2011 to 2012. “These schools show our students can achieve consistently well when you match high expectations with excellent teaching, appropriate support and accountability. And, as East High School demonstrates, it’s never too late for students to improve,” Interim Superintendent Robert Willis said. “Congratulations to our recognized schools and thanks to all of our schools for aiming higher each and every day.”

A total of 624 schools earned 640 spots on the Illinois Honor Roll this year. For more information, go to
