ROCKFORD (WIFR) -- Stateline leaders are still trying to save jobs at Rockford’s Postal Processing Center which has been slated for consolidation; Senator Dick Durbin sat down with the postmaster general to request a five month moratorium on postal closings.
Durbin said, “We can be proud of the Rockford Processing Center, just a few years ago the Postal Service said it was one of the best. So I asked the Post Master General, why close it?"
The Postmaster General told Durbin that while Rockford is an efficient branch it's not as big as the Madison one and they are more equipped to take on our work load. That comes at the expense of hundreds of jobs and speedy delivery in our area. Now the senate is working on a new bill to try and find better ways to deal with the postal service's budget shortfall.
Durbin says it's just a matter of right-sizing the postal service.
