ROCKFORD (WIFR) -- The Literacy Council has announced that a new group of volunteers have successfully completed their tutor training and are being matched with learners.
The tutors are: Mary Newport, Julia Seper, Sandra Sullivan, Torrie Thomas, Kevin Fay, Lisa Nelson, Carrie Houston, Chris Walsh, Eloise Wheeler, Ray Owens, Gwen Anderson, Judith Wilfert, Herb Klunk, Nancy Rivera, Sherri Kulawinski, and Sameer Aljobori.
Currently there are 51 people on the waiting list for a tutor match.
To become a tutor, you must:
• be over the age of 18
• have a high school diploma or GED
• possess good communication skills
• have flexibility and patience
• have the willingness to meet with a student for two hours a week for a minimum of one year
Experience teaching is not a requirement. New Tutor Workshop teaches techniques for teaching reading and English as a Second Language to adults. Tutors completing training will be matched with a learner in Rockford, Belvidere, or Loves Park.
