Temperatures About to Rise, Flooding a Possibility

CHICAGO (AP) -- The National Weather Service is forecasting moderating temperatures will result in snow melt and possible flooding in northern Illinois.

The weeks of snow and bitter cold and then more snow is about to give way to temperatures rising above the freezing mark. That means those mounds of snow in yards and along streets will shrink.

The weather service says people who live along rivers and in flood prone areas should get ready for the possibility of flooding. And the city of Chicago is deploying additional crews to help keep water draining and catch basins clear. Officials are asking residents to remove debris from streets before it migrates to catch basins, where it could hinder drainage and cause street flooding.

Colder temperatures at night will likely slow the rate of melting.
