Teen Protects Grandmother, Tackles Purse Snatcher

ROCKFORD (WIFR) -- "I don't think I'm a hero. I just helped get my grandma's purse back," says Jasmine Gonzalez.

Gonzalez, who has a cold, went to Walgreens at 1602 Kishwaukee on Sunday night to get cough medicine. She and her grandmother were walking out of the store around 7pm when a man tried to take her grandma's purse.

When Gonzalez heard her grandma scream, an adrenaline rush pushed her into action. She ran after the attacker and pushed him to the ground. She then grabbed the purse.

Two men who saw the ordeal in the parking lot also jumped in, but the attacker fled.

Police found him a few hours later at an unrelated domestic dispute.
The alleged purse snatcher was 27-year-old Gerardo Eusebio

"I just can't believe that i did it. Now that i think about it I'm like what if he had a gun?" Gonzalez says.

Her grandmother, who walks slowly because of severe arthritis, survived the scuffle with only minor scrapes and bruises from being dragged on the parking lot's pavement.

But he didn't have a gun, and now the timid teenager is being praised for her bravery.
