Task Force Approves New School Closure Plan for District 205

ROCKFORD (WIFR) ā€“ District 205 leaders are finally speaking out about a recommended facilities plan that would close 8 schools.

Members of the facilities task force have approved an altered version of Plan ā€œCā€ after getting community feedback on three plans. This one involves closing 8 schools instead of nine. West View Elementary will remain open.

There will also be two new schools, one to replace Nelson and Kishwaukee
and another for White Swan and Cherry Valley. Also, Beyer Elementary will become an early Childhood site instead of Lathrop.

"Beyer is really a good place for an early childhood center, it serves a population where if we looked at the density maps of the early childhood students, there's a good concentration in that area, it's air conditioning, it's all one level," said Chief Operations Officer Todd Schmidt.

Schmidt says they changed Beyer to an early childhood site so they could keep Lathrop as an elementary school. To avoid building a large addition as Conklin to serve elementary students in that area. The community can weigh in on the plan at a meeting at 6 p.m. on July 22nd in the District's board room.
