UPDATE: ROCKFORD (WIFR) – A woman will spend the next 15 years in prison for planning to kill a Rockford man for his money.

32-year-old Crystal Caldwell pled guilty to conspiracy to commit first-degree murder. Back in July 2013, police found James Schoenherr dead inside his home in the 500 block of Sawyer Road.

Detectives traced his debit card information back to Caldwell. Police say she and another suspect planned to rob and kill him.

UPDATE: Rockford Police have made an arrest in connection with one of the 8 murders that happened within the city in July.

Officers caught 31-year-old Crystal Caldwell using the credit card of 63-year-old James Schoenherr. He's the man found dead in his bathtub on Sawyer Road during a welfare check. Police say the pair probably knew one another but wouldn't say how. Caldwell has been charged with First Degree Murder, Conspiracy to Commit First Degree Murder, Robbery, and Residential Burglary.

UPDATE: ROCKFORD (WIFR) – After a man was found dead during a welfare check, Rockford police have now ruled the suspicious death a homicide.

63-year-old James Schoenherr was found in his bathtub with the water running and his hands were tied behind his back. An autopsy shows he might have been in a physical altercation, but the coroner isn’t sure how he died.

This marks the city’s 8th murder in just over two weeks.

At the scene of Rockford’s 8th July murder on Sawyer Road, a manned police car now guards a house surrounded by yellow tape and neighbors concerned for their safety.
“I knew something was wrong because I didn’t see him out."

The man we interviewed wants to remain anonymous. He says he called 9-1-1 after he didn’t see his neighbor for a few days. He says when he went to check on the man, he found the back door open with the air conditioning running.

“I thought he had a stroke or something and to find out it was murder, it’s scary,” said the neighbor.

Across the street, another neighbor is repairing a door where he says someone tried to break in.

Police won’t say whether the crimes are related. What we do know, the 63-year-old victim’s killer remains on the run.

The crimes aren’t just happening in one part of the city and 6 of the last 8 were shooting deaths. Rockford Police are working around the clock to try and get these murders solved.

If you have any information on these crimes or know someone involved, please give Crimestoppers a call.
