ROCKFORD (WIFR) -- The Rockford Alcohol Free Teens (RAFT) Coalition announces the winner of their 2012 Social Norms Campaign poster contest. The contest was held to encourage area youth not to drink alcohol before the legal drinking age. Carmen Mendoza, an 11 year old 6th grade student at Rockford Environmental Science Academy (RESA), won a $50 Cherryvale gift card for her winning poster.
Posters were required to include the word “DECIDE”; this year’s theme was for RAFT’s Social Norms Campaign targeting youth. The posters also had to include the phrase “Not to drink before age 21”. Copies of the winning poster will be displayed in the campaign’s participating schools which include RESA, Barbour Language Academy and West Middle School. In addition to the poster contest, each student from participating schools will have the opportunity to sign cards pledging not to drink before age 21 and receive a “DECIDE” wristband as a reminder of their commitment to the pledge.
RAFT is working to reduce the impact of alcohol, tobacco and other drug use by raising awareness through education, advocacy and outreach strategies in the community. Other strategies implemented by RAFT include Social Norms Marketing Campaigns targeting adults, City-wide Alcohol Compliance Checks and BASSET, a responsible beverage server training.
RAFT is funded in whole or in part by the Illinois Department of Human Services.
