Stephenson Co. Board Members Upset About Transparency

FREEPORT (WIFR) -- Some tense moments at Thursday night’s Stephenson County Board meeting. Transparency was the theme of the night as numerous board members said it throughout the meeting while talking about the appointments of a new board member to fill a vacant seat and when hiring a new county administrator.

Most of the talk revolved around the hiring process for the county administrator. The finance committee held a meeting to interview the final candidates two weeks ago, but because of a fight between board members it was cancelled after just a few minutes. Board Chairman William Hadley had two board members finish the hiring process, something many board members had a problem with but in the end John Light, a Woodstock native was hired with a 13 to 4 vote to take over for retiring County Administrator Russ Mulnix.

“It’s a beautiful county you have a mix of industries you have wonderful public services ranging from the park district to the school district, you have a lot of opportunities in Stephenson County.

Light has experience in both finance and human resources. He will train for a month before taking over July 1.

Ashley DeMeester resigned from that seat last month amid a criminal investigation she didn't live in the district when she was elected. Board Chairman Hadley decided to hold off another month before filling her seat, something many board members weren't happy about.
