BYRON (WIFR) -- The family of a fallen Marine is trying to carry on their hero's name by donating a scholarship to high school students.
Friends of 19-year old Lance Corporal Alec Catherwood say he left a mark on everyone he met. Today the community gathered on North Union Street in Byron to celebrate his life along with his service and his sacrifice to our country.
Catherwood died nearly three years ago during a tour in Afghanistan. His father Kirk says the annual festival gives him a chance to reflect on his son.
“Alec was fun to be around,” his father Kirk said. “He liked to joke and laugh, be silly and not really act his age.”
Catherwood's platoon was ambushed while trying to rescue fellow Marines in October of 2010.
