Stateline Counties on Poverty Concern Lists

STATELINE (WIFR) -- A new report finds that a third of Illinoisans are living in or near poverty, a higher rate than during the depths of the Great Recession.

The Social Impact Research center says Winnebago and Lee Counties are of special concern. Researchers compiled a well-being index that looks at factors like poverty, unemployment, and high school graduation rates. Winnebago scored negatively on seven of the eight factors and Lee on four.

Food pantries across the state say some people who are working full-time jobs still can't make ends meet. The number of people collecting food stamps increased 19% during the recession and has increased an additional 41% since it ended three years ago.
