State Police Urging Drivers and Passengers to Buckle Up

ROCKFORD (WIFR) -- Illinois State Police will be out in full force this weekend making sure we’re all wearing our seatbelts.

With Memorial Day weekend coming up Illinois State Police are going to be cracking down on drivers and passengers who don't buckle up. Officers will be out in full force conducting roadside safety checks while keeping a close eye for distracted drivers and seatbelt violators. Angela Johnson is just one of the estimated 9,000 who have been saved by seatbelts in the last 30 years.

"And the next thing I knew, I was rolled over hanging in my seat belt with all of the airbags deployed. I know the seat belt saved my life, that and a combination with the airbags,” Johnson said.

The National Safety Council predicts almost 400 lives will be lost this holiday weekend due to traffic fatalities.
