ROCKFORD (WIFR) – Rockford Park District wants to make sure Stanfield Beach is safe before they re-open it to the public.

Today a lifeguard took samples of the water in Levings Park to confirm it wasn’t contaminated by the anhydrous ammonia leak at nearby Conserv FS. The Beach has been closed to swimmers all weekend, but we should know more tomorrow if it’s safe to re-open.

In the meantime, the attorney general’s office is still trying to decide whether or not to file injunctions against both Conserv FS and Nova-Kem in Seward.

ROCKFORD (WIFR) -- Standfield Beach, located at 1420 S. Pierpont Ave., Rockford, is currently closed until further notice.

As a precaution, the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency (IEPA) is testing Levings Lake after this week’s ammonia leak at Conserve FS. Levings Park will remain open, since there does not appear to be any immediate threat to the safety of those fishing at Levings Lake or using Levings Park for recreational purposes.

Standfield Beach is a Rockford Park District facility operated in partnership with BeachWatch LLC. Activities include swimming, sand volleyball, paddleboat rentals, and concessions.
