Stand Against Racism at RVC

ROCKFORD (WIFR) -- Community members as well as RVC staff, faculty and students are invited to show their support in the stand against racism by attending any or all of four different events at three RVC locations.

The featured event will take place on Wednesday, April 24 from 6:30 to 8:00 p.m. in the Student Center Atrium on RVC’s main campus. Keynote Speaker, Dr. Art Munin, will facilitate an interactive presentation entitled Bystander Intervention: Stand Against, Don’t Stand By!

Traditional diversity education focuses on the roles of perpetrator and victim as it relates to discrimination. However, we will more often fill the role of the bystander during such instances and too few of us have the skills and confidence to intercede. This bystander intervention workshop is designed to empower bystanders to assist others in dangerous and harmful situations. In this workshop, we explore where the “bystander effect” comes from, how we can overcome it, and what skills are necessary to become engaged bystanders. A community of effective and engaged bystanders is one of the strongest tools we have in combating the effects of discrimination in society.

Three smaller scale Stand Against Racism events will also take place at RVC locations that same week:

Tuesday, April 23, 11:00 am - 2:00 pm
RVC’s Stenstrom Center (4151 Samuelson Road, Rockford)
Open mic to voice your support of the Stand Against Racism, or share a favorite quote, or read the YWCA’s Pledge; also featuring music and short videos.

Wednesday, April 24, 12:00 - 1:00 pm
RVC’s Learning & Opportunity Center, Stewart Square
Begin at the LOC on the corner of South Main Street & West State Street for a “march” around downtown Rockford.

Thursday, April 25, 11:00 am - 2:00 pm
RVC’s Main Campus – Student Center Atrium (3301 North Mulford Road, Rockford)
