ROCKFORD (WIFR) – We’re about a year away from heading inside the new downtown Sportscore on the Rock for the very first time and now the complex has its first event on the books.
The Amateur Athletic Union 6th Grade Girls Basketball National Championships is headed to Rockford in 2018. RACVB President John Groh made the announcement Monday night at City Council, adding that 100 teams will compete over 4-5 days. He says the tournament should draw 3,600 people and rake in about $750,000 for the local economy.
"The AAU has confidence, they've been to town, they've toured the facility, they've seen the plans and they're excited about it. That excitement is going to trickle out to other organizations as we make this announcement. In the coming weeks and months, we'll have additional announcements about tournaments that are choosing Rockford and saying yes to downtown,” said Groh.
Groh says they also had talks with two more tournament directors Monday afternoon. He says seeing the Amerock contract approved should cause more of the dominos to fall.
