WISCONSIN (WIFR) -- The Southwest Wisconsin Workforce Development Board (SWWDB) has recently received a $292,500 National Emergency Grant (NEG) to help those unemployed in the area. The grant is designed to assist dislocated workers find sustainable employment in high growth industries and occupations. Priority focus will be to assist eligible veterans and the long-term unemployed, however, recently dislocated workers are also eligible to receive training services under the grant.
The funds will be especially helpful in working with private employers to help both the employee and employer, mainly through customized and On-the-Job Training (OJT) programs. “The employers can define the parameters and goals for the new employee, who would come from the dislocated worker pool,” explained Robert Borremans, Executive Director of the SWWDB. “Flexibility allows for the grant to meet the special requirements of the employer, while the employer agrees to hire the individual upon successful completion of the training,” he added. Customized training requires that employers provide half of the overall training costs.
“We’ve had some very successful OJT partnerships over the past several years, which have helped both the company and the individual,” Borremans added. “This grant funding will allow us to continue and expand these programs, which is a true ‘win-win’ for all involved.” OJT allows companies to define the training to specific standards, practices and tasks the company uses. SWWDB matches current dislocated workers to their knowledge and skill areas to like-minded employers in the area.
In addition, the grant will provide tuition and materials assistance to dislocated workers currently enrolled in the training, along with pre-requisite remedial and class-sized training related to high-demand occupations. Class-sized training can be arranged between technical colleges or other eligible training providers.
“Any eligible dislocated worker should take advantage of these funds. They’re meant to help them get the proper training, especially short-term training, for a job that will be viable for the present and future labor market,” said Rhonda Suda, SWWDB Workforce Operations Manager.
