DIXON (WIFR) -- "I'm no hero."
25-year-old Army Specialist Michael Shoemaker uttered those words during a speech Saturday morning while being honored at a benefit in Dixon.
Shoemaker suffered a traumatic brain injury in March 2012 in Afghanistan following an explosion while he and his unit were unloading an ammunition truck.
Following several surgeries and a long recovery, Shoemaker is now healthy and hoping to get his message across.
"Really I'm just hoping it opens the community's eyes to stuff that's going on and organization's out there to help people," said Shoemaker. "Like I'm perfectly fine, I can walk, I can't run but there's quadruple amputees who are going to live like that for the rest of their life."
A parade down South Peoria Avenue preceded the benefit, which was held at the V.F.W.
