ROCKFORD (WIFR) – The Old Sixpenny Inn on Route 251 near the airport will finally be coming down this summer. The motel has been vacant for at least a decade. Winnebago County is buying the old motel for $400,000. It will cost about $200,000 more to bulldoze it. This coincides with a $9.7 million project to rebuild and expand Airport Road.

"Airport Road will become a very nice entrance to the airport. If you are coming from the north or the east, it makes all the sense in the world to come off Bypass 20 and get off at 11th street/251, drop down about a quarter of a mile and come in right on Airport Road,” said RFD Director Mike Dunn.

Demolition is expected to start sometime this summer, with the hope of Road Construction starting by the end of the year.
